Military History Tours          On Tour - Our Other ANZAC Day 26 April 2012

The day started off was cold and windy and progressed to wet and cold.

The first stop of the day was at Mont St Quentin to visit the new 2nd Division Memorial. After a chilling site visit a hot coffee was required.

The second stop was at the German War Cemetery at Maissemy that has over 30,000 burials.

At Bellengise the area around the site of the 4th Division Memorial is now home to wind turbine generators. The 4th Division Memorial still adds solemn majesty to the lonely site.

At the Riqueval Tunnel site, the attack of the US 27th Division, US 30th Division, US 301st Heavy Tank Battalion, 3rd Australian Division and 5th Australian Division was discussed. The Riqueval Tunnel was the bridge over and into the Hindenburg front line. The Tennessee State Memorial for 30th US Division has little mention of the Australian Corps.

High Tree Cemetery marks the end of the Australian Infantry fighting in World War One.

Ken Goodchild was able to visit the grave of his ancestor Sydney Sheen in Tincourt New British Cemetery.
