Military History Tours On Tour - Boer War in South Africa 27 May 2016A day not without incident. A long trip through the beautiful South African countryside where our South African guide Pieter took the time to explain the history that has brought the nation to where it is today. A short comfort stop then a visit to the site near Motetma where in November 1900 the Battle of Rhenosterkop raged. Our Australian Military Historian John took us through the course of this conflict where Australian and New Zealand troops fought side by side for the first time. We also had a valued contribution from Pieter. We are fortunate to have retired soldiers of the Australian and South African armies able to give depth to our understanding. Then on to Middlebank a fast food lunch, followed by a visit to the Boer War cemetery. Much work has been done here since our last visit, though sadly the newly renovated fence gate was securely locked. We had to pay our respects to those interred here by peering through the gaps. A short drive to our hotel at Witbank (now called eMalahleni (meaning æplace of coalÆ), a quality meal, and a good nightÆs sleep.
