Military History Tours          On Tour - Boer War in South Africa 3 June 2016

Another great day.

A little later in the morning, 0900 instead of 0800, we headed south to the site of the only Black Week battle where Australians in an Australian uniform took part, some 29 New South Wales Lancers guarding the Royal Horse Artillery position. The site is well cared for and signposted. Pieter and John H explained the significance of the landmarks, and with the aid of the detailed 3D map, the course of the battle.

Then to the equally well maintained Museum, where we were able to view the artefacts, including a 15 pounder field gun and enter a bunker where an AV display explained the engagement in detail.

Before we left the site, we were able to wish a honeymoon couple all the best, and said hello to a pet meercat and its 3 year old mistress.

On the way back to Kimberley, we paid our respects at the memorial to the Boer soldiers who died at Maggersfontein.

Back at our hotel, we who did not order well done steak enjoyed an excellent lunch, albeit there was a delay in serving.

In the afternoon, we visited the McGregor Museum where we were most impressed with the display, including the rooms that serve as the Museum of the Kimberley Regiment. Later, as the light was fading, we visited some other city landmarks.

Tomorrow is a free day.
