Military History Tours          On Tour - Our Other ANZAC Day Tour 27 April 2014

Our touring today started at Heath Cemetery, Harbonierres where Ron Lyons gave an overview of the Battle of Amiens and the Black Day for the German Army in 1918.

We them moved to Mont Saint Quentin where John Lee gave a presentation on the battle and the group viewed the unique 2nd Division Memorial with its Digger sculpture.

Due to the poor weather and after a coffee stop, we moved on further east to visit the German Military Cemetery at Maissemy.

Travelling further east towards the Hindenberg Line positions, we looked at the Australian assault at Chaudres and the 4th Division Memorial near Bellenglise.

Lunch at the Riqueval Tunnel saw us now deep inside the Hindenberg Line positions.

After lunch, we moved on to Montbrehain where Ron Lyons gave a presentation on the battle for "The Last Ridge" and the final actions for the Australians in the war on 5 October 1918.

Our touring ended with a visit to nearby High Tree Cemetery to see 4 of our soldiers who were buried the furthest east on the Western Front. Here, in pouring rain, Stevie and Shannon Richards and Jack Drummond laid poppies on the graves. This was followed by the Ode and One Minute's Silence. A fitting end to honouring the efforts of the Australian soldiers in the Great War.
