Military History Tours          On Tour - Our Other ANZAC Day Tour 26 April 2013

Today our run of fine and warm weather turned and we had a cool and drizzly day.

After everyone enjoying very deep sleeps we set out to Dernancourt for a discussion of the 4 and 5 Division actions halting the German advance of Apr 1918.

From there we proceed through Corbie and witnessed a town square market day from the coach. We had no time for coffee though........

Trevor and Jackie Neal were able to locate the grave of Pte McAlary at Mericourt L'Abbe and we gathered to remember his sacrifice. We enjoyed lunch and a coffee back in Villers-Bretonneux then revisited the Australian Memorial site to discuss the 15 Brigade action on Anzac Day 1918. This was followed by an inspection of the 13 Bde attack route which, with the 15th Bde resulted in the recapture of the town.

We also visited the Australian Corps Memorial at the site of the Battle of Hamel in July 1918.

Meanwhile, the Wheatleys visited Wimereux where they located the burial site of a relative who served with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Forresters. This is also the resting place of LtCol McCrae, author of 'In Flanders Fields'.

We enjoyed our visit to the Victoria School and Museum, again in Villers-Bretonneux to close the afternoon.
