Military History Tours          Villers-Bretonneux Centenary Tour 27 April 2018

Today our tour split, we said goodbye to those on tour one as they headed for Paris.

Our tour two guests headed for Flanders. First stop was the magnificent Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge and a chance for our guests to get a different perspective on World War 1 from Canadian students taking a break from University. We were taken down the tunnel system and given a tour of the reconstructed trench system before heading for the memorial itself.

On to Fromelles where we visited the Cobber Memorial, VC Corner, Le Trou Aid Post and Pheasant Wood Cemetery. The tragic deployment of 5 Div with so much loss of life was discussed.

At Ploegsteert Stuart was able to find reference to his ancestor Murray Patten MC and the tour group sampled hot Belgian coffee and chocolate.

Our final stop for the day was at Messines where we visited the New Zealand and Irish memorials and discussed the battle.

A great meal, convivial company, then off to bed.

Tomorrow a leisurely trip to Brugge.
