Military History Tours          Villers-Bretonneux Centenary Tour 24 April 2018

Today we followed the successful campaign by the Australian Corps that ensured the Great War ended in 1918 and did not drag on for another 12 months. We started at Dernancourt where as well as discussing the course of the battle, we helped Ross commemorate the loss of Albert Tracy. We inspected the 3 Division Memorial at Sailly Le Sec and discussed the Australian deployment north of the Somme. At Dive Copse Cemetery, another commemoration for Ross, Daniel Arrow thence to a field above Sailly Laurette where Rhonda was able to lay a wreath where Walter Allen died.

On to the Australian Memorial at Le Hamel where we discussed the successful battles of Le Hamel and Amiens. Battles where the innovative tactics devised by Monash and the skill and bravery of our soldiers caused Ludendorff to lament a black day for the German Army. Whilst following the course of the open warfare advance to the great bend of the Somme, we paused at Proyart where Brett’s uncle William Watson won the Military Medal.

At Mt St Quentin we discussed the battle and visited the 2 Division Memorial, then to Bellenglise to visit the 4 Division Memorial and discuss the Hindenburg Line battles. The day ended with a visit to the canal at Riqueval, site of the battle for the Main Hindenburg Line.

Back to our hotel and early to bed, a big day tomorrow.
