Military History Tours Le Hamel Centenary Tour 4 July 2018
Today we were part of the Centenary of the Battle of Le Hamel commemoration.
The ceremony was smaller than most Anzac Centenary commemorations, this gave it a character larger events could not match. The organisation was very good, a lateral approach ensured no-one had difficulty climbing the hill. Speeches, in particular that of the Governor General were pithy and eloquently delivered. It was nice to see Americans and members of the Royal Tank Regiment on the podium.
The descent to the town was steeper than the climb, the reward a fair run by the townspeople, displays and refreshments.
Leaving Le Hamel we headed for Amiens and an afternoon visiting the cathedral and exploring the town.
Dinner was at a restaurant in the town of Peronne.
Tomorrow our tour two gest heads north to Flanders while the rest of us head back to Paris via the Glade of the Armistice.
